Amazon Subsidiary Alexa Sells Links to Competitor's Sites

Alexa is now selling space in their related links pages. Normally the related links are based on DMOZ category listings. However, if you have enough money, you can buy an exclusive listing on your competitor's sites. For example, when you visit ZoneEdit, a self-funded, but popular website, you get a link to UltraDNS - a well-funded, but less popular company. However when you visit the related links for UltraDNS, you see no mention of any competitors.

Good news from Wisconsin

Reminiscent of the move by California in 2002, a group of researchers and institutions have agreed to support stem cell research. This research, which has the potential to combat debilitating disease and even aging, was banned or restricted by many governments worldwide. Despite the controversy, a lot of progress in creating and maintaining stem cells is being made.

These restrictions guarantee that stem-cell research will be privately funded and patented, rather than federally funded and public. This will have the effect of greatly increasing the expense of treatments, but not their availability. Why would our ruling elite want to make sure that the rich are the only ones who could afford to live long, healthy lives? It's yet another move towards corporate world ownership.

Extropians Suck

Yes, I believe that, with gradual cellular replacement, a multicellular organism can replace, renew and repair it's entire physical form indefinitely. I don't see the need for "decay", except as programmed by evolution. I also feel that it's perfectly natural for humans to seek longer, healthier lives - as all organisms do.

Some have called me an "extropian" or "transhumanist". So naturally I surfed around and found that, yes there are a bunch of people out there who think similar things (of course... there always is).

The difference is that I'm practical about it. I can't find a single "extro" who is serious about advancement and evolution of the species. They're all about cyborgs and nanotech science fiction that's "gonna happen" like a million years from now. It's crap. How about working on the minor advances right now that are needed to push extropy?

I guess I could consider myself a "practical extropian", if that's not a contradiction. A practical agenda involves real social activism, technology investments, and political lobbying... not stuck-up, pie-in-the-sky, mental-masturbation circle-jerks.

Detained Intel engineer becomes Internet cause

Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, hundreds of people in the United States have been rounded up by federal agents and held in detention, without any charges being filed.

Most of them, like Mike Hawash, are just regular citizens with tenuous connections to Islamic countries.

I've personally had investigators in my office. I was born in America, but I disagree with our administration... so they've been screwing with me. They have filed several subpoenas for court appearances and questions, and have required me to remain silent about the investigations. If I wind up disappearing permanently, well.. you'll all know why it happened. Because I disagree with Bush.

The Majority Party

Idea which, if it's realized, would positively reform our political system via a non-partisan entity known as the Majority Party.

War's winding down

Relax a bit. It's Spring after all. And it seems a lot of good will come out of this after all. Bush never dropped the big one, and Iraq didn't use chem weapons. Every thing looks OK on CNN, but then what is this all about?

Kuro5hin in Spring

After metallic frost
Sixty degrees on the first good day
Shouting sun-drenched kids banking
Basketball's an undancable rhythm

Anaheim omlette and cafe-con-leche
Patience may deliver a perfect laptop
Iraq a playground for idle mind
What is she saying?
Flip.

Rattering jazz on your QS8
No more sex
No good reason, never had one
Never wanted one
Flip.

Free now to go where?
Amsterdam in summer?
Morocco in the fall?
Kuro5hin in spring?
