End of the World

After I fell in love with some rather good kittens and spent a few hours in the mysty world of Samorost, I was pleased today to laugh until the end of the world.

Help America Lie

One of the surest things in politics. If it sounds like too much of a good thing then it's probably really, really evil. Take the "Patriot Act". When it was passed, many people thought "sounds good" without reading it. Now we know that it allows the U.S. government to spy on its own citizens and arrest people and put them in jail without a trial.

Now there's the "Help America Vote Act". Red warning signs all over that one. This act will replace all of our paper balloting systems with electronic systems that have lousy security. Any hacker with the source code could break into the counting servers by making a phone call to the server center. In addition, the companies that are building these machines are all backed by wealthy special interest groups.

My suggestion to build an open source alternative and lobby for HAVA money needs about a quarter million in funding... if anyone knows anyone who can come up with the cash, I'd gladly build it.

New York Minute

9-year old girl is offered ride to school, she refuses and the Upper West side is in an uproar at the attempted kidnapping. This is front page stuff. Is it possible he really was offereing her a ride? Maybe, but that's not the point. Also today a 12 year old girl in the Bronx died of a drug overdose, but it... didn't make the news. She should have known better!

Also in the news, a group of high school students who committed a string of robberies was arrested. They posed as prostitutes and police and would then fake-arrest and rob men who solicited sex. The group was arrested in an "unplanned sting operation" in which an undercover police officer solicited them for sex, and then overpowerd the vigilantee teens. The rumor is that the off-duty officer stopped short of taking their wallets when he realised how little money they had.

Meanwhile, rampant "legal prostitution" continues well-advertised, unabated and unarrested in New York.

Junior Travel Writers Wanted

Get in before it's hot. WikiTravel is a new project which is using Wiki technology to build a travel guide. The project is new, so this is an opportunity for new authors to gain credibility and credit as travel writers.

If you've something to say about your neighborhood, or if you know the cool places to go in town, try writing about it. Warning: collaborative web content building is fun and can be addictive.
